Let’s round five point eight six seven to one decimal place.
First, I find the digit I’m keeping. One decimal place means one digit after the decimal point — so I’m keeping the eight.
Next, I look at the digit immediately to its right. That’s six.
Six is five or more, so I round up. The eight becomes nine.
My answer is five point nine.
Now you try: round twelve point zero four nine to two decimal places.
02 / GUIDED PRACTICE
Round 12.049 to 2 decimal places.
First, which digit tells you whether to round up?
Keep the hundredths digit, 4. Look at the next digit, 9. Should the 4 stay the same or increase?

12.049 → keep two decimal places: 12.04. The next digit is 9, so increase the hundredths digit from 4 to 5. Answer: 12.05.
